A Brass Gate Valve is a type of fluid-regulating valve that turns the flow of water and other fluids on and off. They are intended to be fully open or fully closed, functioning like an on/off switch in an electrical system. Gate valves often are found as the main shutoff in a household water supply system. They also are found in industrial facilities to control fluid flow. Gate valves can be made of iron, steel, bronze or plastic.
Turn the water on to the house at the city shut-off valve. Study the gate valve. If the circular valve handle cannot be turned counter-clockwise anymore, the valve is fully open, and water is passing through the valve to the various household water fixtures.
Check the water and ensure it is passing through the valve by turning on faucets or other water appliances. Note if the water proceeds at standard pressure.
Slowly turn the circular gate valve handle clockwise, until it is tight and cannot be turned anymore. When tight, do not force the handle closed. The wedge-shaped gate in the center of the valve,a kind of Pe Pipe Fitting, has fully moved across the water flow path, stopping water from entering the household pipes.
Open a faucet to check that the valve is closed. If closed, only a trickle of water may escape from the faucet, before all water ceases.
Turn the faucet off.
Go back to the gate valve and move its handle counter-clockwise, until it cannot be moved anymore. The valve is now fully open again, with water flowing through the pipe to the various water fixtures. Turn on a faucet to check that the water pressure in the pipeline is back to normal pressure.
